"HERB"
By way of Tijuana, we proudly present the groovy and spicy tribute to the powerhouse sound of Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass. "HERB" delivers the full glory of the Brass' sophisticated style with an updated edge that is poised to capture a new generation while re-igniting the passion and utter hipness of a bygone era.
"HERB" exudes the suave, groomed sound that catapulted the Tijuana Brass to the forefront of 60s pop culture. TJB charged the soul of America and the world with their crafty blend of fiery Latino rhythms, zany pop, and South-Of-The-Border temperament. "HERB" consists of an all-star 7-8 piece band with members from such luminous bands as Clubfoot Orchestra, grammy-winning Brave Combo, The Billy Nayer Show, Les Claypool, Casino Royale, Cirque du Soleil, Idiot Flesh, and so on and so forth.
Since its inception in July '96, "HERB" has performed with/for James Brown, Nancy Sinatra, Sergio Mendes, SF Symphony's Black & White Ball, Francis Ford Coppola, SF Giants @ Candlestick (Monster) Park, Super Diamond, Dick Bright's SRO, Bud E. Luv, Oranj Symphonettes, Geggy Tah, & Bob Rubin. They haved been featured on radio stations such as LIVE 105 and KFOG-FM, TV appearances on KRON's Bay TV morning shows, and press in the Bay Guardian, BAM Magazine, the SF Chronicle, & Hungry Freaks Magazine. "HERB" is also featured on the Wildebeest Records 1999 release, "Surfin' Senorita".
Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass were the hottest act in the business! One reason they were so engaging is that they didn't labor over it. Their sound was lighthearted & carefree yet confident; wild & exotic yet classy, young & vibrant yet sexy. The Good spirits bounced between zesty Latin shuffles, bawdy Vegas striptease, romantic Brazilian grooves, playful Dixieland jazz, and evocative international motifs.
Herb Alpert & TJB were everywhere in the 60s. They were outsold by only three artists - Elvis, The Beatles, and Frank Sinatra. Even if you didn't own a record player, it would have been impossible to escape their sound. Turn on the TV and you'd see one of their Emmy nominated specials. Flip the channel and you'd hear the frothy "Lollipops And Roses" or the sprightly "Spanish Flea" on The Dating Game. Wait for a commerical and you'd hear "The Mexican Shuffle" & "Tangerine" being used to sell Teabury gum and Sego diet drink. Check out the latest James Bond movie, "Casino Royale", and you'd hear Herb performing the title song. Flick on the radio and you'd hear one of the group's many Top 40 hits.
TJB was red-hot throughout the decade beginnning with "The Lonely Bull" single in 1962 and exploding into the early 70s when they recorded 14 platinum albums and earned seven Grammys. In 1966, four of their first five albums listed in the Top 10 at the same time - the only group to ever do this! In 1968, Herb's vocal debut, "This Guy's In Love With You", shot to No. 1 in just six weeks, becoming the first No. 1 hit for Herb, A&M (Alpert & Moss) Records, and songwriting team Burt Bacharach and Hal David.
